When doing your basic dog training try and carry out the lessons away from any outside influences like birds or cats that he might chase. Go to an empty field or park where there aren't any other people or animals. Tell your dog firmly that you want him to sit, then take your hand and place it on his back and gently guide his bottom down, when it is down say sit and tell him he's a good boy, then reward him with a treat.
By regularly repeating this exercise, your dog will sit when he is told, because he knows that by carrying out your orders he will be rewarded and also because he can see that you are pleased with him. Eventually your dog will naturally do what you tell him, and there will be no need to give him a reward.
When dogs are born they are like soft clay, they need to be shaped and groomed. You can teach your dog from any age but the younger you start the better, as an old dog may just not have the incentive to learn.
