The Wedding Is Most Peoples' Primary Focus, But The Rehearsal Supper Can Be Memorable, Too
There are countless plans, expenses and anxieties that go along with planning a wedding ceremony. If couples aren't careful they can get so involved with planning the wedding day and attempting to get all the details right that there is little time to enjoy the experience. When my niece was planning her wedding ceremony she had three bridal showers to attend, reception plans to finalize and was trying to find a venue for the rehearsal dinner. The third wedding shower was located at my home. I'm her godmother so I had wanted to do something special for her. Several days before the shower we talked on the telephone. She sounded very anxious. She and her fiance were also having challenges selecting the best wedding songs for the wedding ceremony. I recommended that she come the night before the shower and stay overnight and we would relax and I would help her organize a list of what still had to be done prior to the wedding day. She thought this sounded like a great plan.
I did most of of the preparations for the shower prior to my niece coming so that we could concentrate on her needs. She shared that the rehearsal dinner was her main stress because of the fact that the place they had reserved had double booked, so they needed to locate a new location. We started by working on finding the best wedding songs for the wedding ceremony so we could get one stress out of the way thereby giving confidence that the other would be dealt with as well. As I predicted finding the best wedding songs was just a matter of searching the web, listening to samples, ordering and that was that. Now to settle the rehearsal dinner.
The rehearsal dinner is traditionally done by the groom's family; in fact a number of individuals refer to the occasion as the groom's banquet. My niece's fiance is from out of state so his family is is paying for the rehearsal dinner, but they're not able to help with making the arrangements. My niece had contacted the restaurant where the wedding reception will be held, but the only space available was the section where the wedding reception would be taking place. My niece said that the plan was to decorate the reception area prior to going to the church for the rehearsal.
We called two neighboring restaurants to see if they could accommodate the rehearsal dinner. Both had other events scheduled. Her fiance's parents are divorced, also both have married again. This meant that there were more people to incorporate in the rehearsal dinner. This was also adding to her tension because she was trying to figure out the etiquette for seating. She had the seating chart arranged for the wedding, but not knowing where the rehearsal dinner would be happening restricted her capability to prepare a chart.
I asked my niece if she had called the church to see if the fellowship area would be available. Everyone could just mingle and have a light catered meal. This would be much less formal and would be easy to plan. The fellowship area was not being used that day. We called two delis and ordered a buffet meal. My niece called her fiance and told him the new plans for the rehearsal dinner. He thought this sounded fantastic. He would make arrangements to have a friend of his tend bar and would arrange for the drinks.
The rehearsal dinner was a nice relaxed evening. The guests were able to mingle and socialize and the bride and groom didn't feel the need to sit in one spot while everybody ordered their food and had it served. With having a buffet line the atmosphere was very casual and the out of town guests did not have to try and find another location in an area that they were not familiar with.
